Create a Tudor style tunic for your boy doll with this pattern sized to fit 18" slim and 18" soft bodied dolls. Perfect for a Medieval costume.
The main elements of Tudor clothing for men consisted of a shirt, a doublet, short trousers and stockings.
Our tunic is inspired from the doublet but we extended the pleated peplum to knee length.
A doublet is a man's snug-fitting jacket that is shaped and fitted to the man's body.
The doublet was hip length during Medieval times and gradually became shorter or waist length towards the 17th century.
Pattern includes photographic sewing instructions to make the this Tudor Tunic and pattern components are multi-sized for two 18" doll sizes:
~ Sized to fit 18 inch larger dolls such as American Girl® and
~ Sized to fit the 18" slim Carpatina Dolls™ or Kidz n Cats Dolls

Pattern for a two piece ensemble inspired from the historical fashions of the 1860s when the day-wear dresses were high necked. It was unseemly for a woman to show skin before late afternoon. As pale skin was the style, necks and shoulders had to be covered to avoid the sun.
Sleeves were full, widest at the elbow, erupting from a gathered shoulder seam. The skirts were full, gathered or pleated and worn over petticoats or crinolines.
The Bishop sleeve featured in our pattern design has the gathered shoulder, wide elbow, and narrowed at the wrist.
Hair Style: The ideal women of the pre-Civil War South had pale skin and a rounded face. Hair was parted down the center and drawn back, with soft loops on each side of the face that accentuated a round face.
Pattern is multi-sized for two popular 18" doll sizes:
~ For 18 inch regular dolls such as American Girl® and
~ For 18" slim Carpatina , Magic Attic® or Kidz n Cats® Dolls
Recommended Fabrics: Light weight woven fabrics, cotton, linen
Supplies Needed:
- 1/2 yard main fabric
- 1/4 yard lining
- 1 yard lace trim
- 6 Snaps or hook and eye for closure
- Matching thread

In the late 17th and early 18th centuries a coat was a relatively straight loose garment, with the slight fullness in the knee-length skirts falling into folds over the backside of the hips. In the 1720s and 1730s the skirts of the fashionable coat grew in volume and were set into regular pleats. In the 1730s an alternative to the weighty full skirted coat was developed. This new fashioned coat, with narrow skirts set in pleats and other defining features, including a collar, was termed a Frock. Through the middle decades of the century both the coat and the frock were worn, coats being for fashionable full dress, frocks for fashionable undress. By the 1770s the distinctions in purpose and terminology were becoming blurred. None but the most conservative older man would be seen in a full-skirted coat. The frock had entered into fashionable full dress, and was by many simply referred to as a coat. In the closing decade of the 18th century and into the next, the frock dominated fashionable dress and language. In the 18th century the changing fashions led to many sorts of folded or cocked hats - cocked on one, two, or three sides. It was the hat with three sides or the Tricorn Hat that dominated fashion and was seen in innumerable variations of adornment and proportion. Tricorn or tricorne hats had a broad brim, pinned up on either side of the head and at the back, producing a triangular shape. Our Colonial style coat has wide cuffs and pleats and it is completely lined. Comes multi-sized for 18" Slim Carpatina Boy Dolls and for regular 18" American Girl Dolls. Includes a pattern to make a felt tricorne hat with cockaide.

The doublet was worn in Europe between the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries and it changed from being an undergarment to outer garment and from specialized military dress to fashionable civilian dress. The doublet's function as standard everyday attire was primarily to support men's hose, while providing warmth and shaping a man's upper torso. It was used to display appropriate decorative and stylistic features through each period, such as padding, paning (panes or narrow strips of fabric sewn over a contrasting lining), and slashing.
Doublets became increasingly shorter through the second half of the fourteenth century, barely covering the hips, and many had full-length sleeves, ending below the wrist and tightly fitted with a row of buttons from elbow to wrist.
The narrow, two-part sleeves were seamed at the elbow and set into wide, round-shaped armholes for full arm movement. Low, rounded necklines had short standing collars.
In the sixteenth century, the doublet was a major men's garment covering the upper torso from neck to waist. It was tightly fitted with low necklines and wide sleeves, and was constructed with panes or slashing of heavy velvet or satin fabrics.
Our doublet comes in two versions, a sleeveless version and a version with long sleeves created with panes and a fitted lower sleeve closed with a row of buttons.

This is a pattern, by Genniewren Designs, with a difference. There are no printable pattern pieces. You make the pattern pieces from cutting up plastic canvas sheets and circles following measurements in a chart. The chart includes accurate measurements for 9 different popular doll sizes up to 12.25" head circumference, and the pattern includes full instructions for measuring your doll to create additional size hats if required.
So what is a boater? A boater is a hard straw hat with a flat top and a medium sized hard brim. It is made from braided straw. For real boater hats, the hard structure of the hat is achieved by varnishing the hat after it is steamed into shape. The hat you will make from this tutorial doesn’t need to be varnished to achieve its solid construction, as it is made by embroidering with raffia yarn or ribbon on a plastic canvas structure.
The doll’s hair style and wig thickness will affect the fit of this pattern. Please measure your doll’s head carefully before cutting the plastic canvas circles.
The hats were called “boaters” because they were summer hats, often worn for boating on the river. Some people suggest that the hats are descended from the wider brimmed straw hats worn by sailors and gondoliers in the 18th and early 19th centuries, but those hats were not as rigid as a traditional boater hat. It is somewhat surprising that straw hats became summer accessories in England, as the British Isles are not famed for a dry climate and in general straw hats do not survive well in the rain. But Boaters are more stable than the average straw hat because of the heavy varnish finish and double layers of braided straw.
Children had been wearing straw hats with sailor suits since 1846 when the young Bertie (later Edward VII) was given a sailor outfit as a gift. Prince Albert commissioned a painting of the young prince in his sailor outfit as a Christmas gift for Queen Victoria, and thereafter nautical outfits including straw hats became very popular outfits for both boys and girls. Women wore boater hats as a fashion accessory since the late 1880s, when it was popularized by the “Gibson Girl” fashion plates. The boater continued to be a popular style with women until the 1950s.
In Late Victorian (1880 - 1901) and Edwardian times (1901-1911) boaters were worn by both genders. Edwardian gentlemen usually wore them with a striped blazer jacket, an open-necked white shirt, and white or cream flannel pants. A silk cravat matching the striped blazer was often added as a final touch. The boater hat reached the peak of its popularity as a men’s fashion accessory in the late 1920s and early 1930s, where it was de rigeur for young gentlemen in the summer months. After WWII, the boater became less popular for men’s headgear as British society became more egalitarian and hats were not worn in public as much as they had been before the War.
Believe it or not, boaters are still worn today. As well as being fashion accessories, they are also often part of the uniform of private schools in Britain, Australia and New Zealand, as well as some other countries. They are primarily worn by girls as summer school uniform head gear, but boys do wear them too.
As a child, I lived near the famous Harrow School. The boys at Harrow School wear natural straw boater hats with a black ribbon band as part of their every day school uniform. The school is spread out between buildings over a large area across Harrow Hill, and if a boy is seen by a teacher without his boater he is fined or given a punishment of writing out lines for wearing incomplete school uniform!
The boys from Harrow School say you can tell the age of a natural straw boater by its color. The varnish darkens with age. Usually only the new boys who didn’t have a family member at the school before them will have brand new store-bought boaters. The boys who come from old Harrovian families tend to pass the hats down from father to son.
Usually a boater would be made in a natural straw color. But boaters made in other colors than natural straw were very popular with women. Black and navy blue were in demand in the Gibson Girl era, particularly in England where Queen Victoria remained in mourning for the rest of her life after the death of Prince Albert. Pastel shades of dyed straw boaters were commonly worn as Sunday hats for younger girls up to the end of the 1950s.
Recommended Fabrics: Plastic Canvas sheets and circles. Raffia knitting yarn, ribbon yarn or 1/8" ribbon . The hat shell can also be covered in felt or other fabrics if desired.
Supplies Needed:
For dolls with a head circumference of up to 12¼” you will need:
- 1 x 6” diameter 7 count (7 holes to the inch) plastic canvas circle (or a larger diameter circle if you want a wider brim)
- 1 x 4” diameter 7 count plastic canvas circle
- 1 large sheet 10” x 13” of 7 count heavy duty plastic canvas
- 1 x 1.75 oz (50g) (124 yard) ball of King Cole Raffia knitting yarn or similar. I made two of the larger (18” doll) Boater Hats from one ball of this yarn. If you use a different brand then you may need extra yarn. You could also use ribbon yarn, or narrow ribbon for the hat
- Blunt ended tapestry needle with an eye large enough for the raffia yarn
- Ribbon and other embellishments as desired
If you wish to make hat for a doll with a larger head circumference, then you will need to buy larger plastic canvas circles, e.g. 9" or 12" diameter.
You may also find the following tools and notions useful:
- Sharp scissors – please do not use your needlework or sewing scissors to cut the plastic canvas as it will dull the blades.
- Emery paper, you can use this to file off any sharp edges or molding parts you find as you’re working with the plastic canvas.

The suit is a traditional form of men's formal clothes in the Western world and has been around for about four hundred years as a suit of a matching coat, trousers and waistcoat. After the end of the first World War, most men adopted the short lounge coated suit. During the decades that followed, the size of the lapel had changed from wide to a very narrow size. Suit jackets were also cut as straight as possible without any indication of a waistline. Lately, the wearing of suits has become far less common than it once was and is now usually reserved for formal and business activities.

Panniers or side hoops are women's undergarments worn in the 17th and 18th centuries to extend the width of the skirts at the side while leaving the front and back relatively flat. The earlier form of the pannier took the shape similar to a 19th-century crinoline. At their most extreme panniers could extend the skirt several feet at each side. By the 1780s, panniers were normally worn only to very formal gowns and within court fashion.
Our version of panniers is simple to made yet fun and still functional.

The tailcoat was the must have article of clothing for any man of at least middle class standards since the Regency era. It was high in the back of the neck, fitted in the back, chest and abdomen, had long tails and the wide lapels so distinctive of the period. It could be either single or double breasted and could be worn open or closed. It was cut high in front so that even when closed a strip of the waistcoat ( or modern vest) could be seen beneath. The modern tailcoat is very similar with the original ones except the collar shape which is a more relaxed style.

The high waist style of the regency dress was based on the empire style gowns fashionable in France. However, the English gowns were slightly fuller in skirt width than the French gowns. Sheer cotton fabrics such as muslin, gauze, and percale were the most popular English gown materials of the period. Cotton was imported from the Americas and India and manufactured in English textile mills. Since the gowns of this period were so thin, the cold of winter required the adoption of large shawls imported from Kashmir.
Also, the English tailors fashioned the Spencer jacket - a short close fitting jacket cut from the same style as the dress bodice worn underneath the Redingote, which is a long coat. (Separate pattern available for the Redingote and Bonnet).
This pattern includes photographic sewing instructions to make a Dress and a Spencer. All pattern components come in two sizes:

Regency lasted only between 1811 - 1820 and it was a period when King George III was deemed unfit to rule and his son ruled as Prince Regent. The Regency is noted for its elegance and achievements in the fine arts, architecture and fashion which was heavily influenced by the French. The Redingote is a long overcoat similar to a Pelisse and it does not close completely in the front. As the Regency faded and skirts began to widen and grow, the Redingote became a favored outer garment because it revealed the dress beneath and didn’t have to close over an enlarged skirt.
