Get your doll ready for the Renaissance Faire with this medieval shoe pattern inspired by sharp pointed shoes worn by noblemen in the 14th and 15th century. Every person who could afford shoes wore poulaines, though the longer tips were generally reserved for nobility who could afford to wander around in footwear seemingly designed for pratfalls. They were low-cut, flat-soled, slip-on shoe- sometimes fastened with a side lace or toggle. The poulaines distinctive feature was its very pronounced, pointed toe. These shoes from the Middle Ages were also being cut to show off the colored hose around a lord’s ankle. In this time, tunics were getting shorter and young men would have been showing off their legs.

This pattern will guide you to create a pair of poulaines, whether you are creating a medieval outfit or an Elf Costume.

Two methods are included:

• 1. Soft Sole — You completely sew the shoe on the sewing machine and turn once complete.
• 2. Foam Sole — The top of the shoe is completed and then glued onto a foam base.

II’ll never forget the trip we made to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. All the Bavarian towns we visited were so charming. The shops were full of cuckoo clocks and delicate chocolates. The restaurants each had a huge variety of local ales. I especially enjoyed seeing the tour guides dressed in their dirndls. There were so many styles, each one special. Ghillies are the traditional footwear for Highland Dance. Similar shoes are also worn for Irish dancing. Ghillies were traditionally made from a single piece of soft, pliable leather, wrapping, pleating or gathering the leather around the foot, then adding a soft flexible leather sole.

Nowadays, a lot of ghillies have a center front seam and are sewn together, but they still include the traditional cross lacing. This pattern is based on modern style ghillies, which are worn by both male and female Highland Dancers.

Traditional Highland Dance ghillies are made from black leather and have soft natural leather soles, like ballet shoes. Highland Dance regulations allow for the decorative top stitching to be in contrasting bright colors. Some ghillies have eyelets instead of leather loops for the laces. A second pattern sheet has been included for those who wish to use eyelets for the lacing.

Scottish gentlemen usually wear “kilt shoes” or “ghillie brogues” when wearing the kilt for formal dress occasions. These are much more solid shoes with heavy soles and proper heels, but they have the same laced upper as dance ghillies. This pattern can be used for ghillie brogues too, if you use thicker foam for the sole and add the optional heel.
