This sweet and practical 1870 era chemise is designed specifically to be worn under 1870s style dresses with their fashionable fitted sleeves, but works just as well as a dainty summer nightie. It is very simple in design with only four pieces. It features short dolman like sleeves that are edged with lace and a round lace edged yoke that fastens one button at each shoulder (snaps or hook and loop tape can be used, if preferred). The chemise is finished with a lace edged hem that completes this simple, yet feminine garment.

Shifts were generally very plain and simple so that they would be inexpensive to make and easy to clean. Lace and ruffles were often added to the necklines and cuffs of those that could afford them. While this feature had the benefit of looking very pretty, the underlying reason was to provide an additional buffer that not only protected the neckline and cuff edges of the garment from extra wear and tear, but also helped to protect the skin from chaffing at these more vulnerable locations. 

The Thimbles and Acorns 18th Century Fancy Shift incorporates the use of lace and ruffles at the neckline and sleeve cuffs. The sleeve cuffs have an elegant dropped edge that is designed to accentuate a simple ¾ length sleeve like the ones featured in our Young Martha Washington pattern. The adjustable neckline is drawn up with a simple drawstring. Whether you make it with the true gussets for a more authentic historical design or the simpler faux gussets, both produce the same historical silhouette.

Long gone are the days when women and young girls wore several layers of frilly underclothes. Fortunately, our favorite 18” girls are able to continue wearing these charming styles, even if they are no longer practical for us.
Pantalets have 5 length options, with loose or elasticized leg finish. The longest length is more suited to Regency era outfits (1800-1820), with the remainder corresponding to various other eras up to the 1920s.
The Camisole is in the style of a corset cover, which would have covered a young girl’s stays. This is a great project to use up small amounts of lace or to experiment with small remnants of fine fabrics. The set would also look lovely as a modern girl’s pajamas.
Both pieces may be made of very lightweight cottons, silky wovens, lining fabrics, and of course silk. Keep in mind,very lightweight fabrics are best if meant to be worn below other garments.
The Pantalets can be dressed up with extra lace, pintucks (instructions given) and loose or elasticized legs.

A camisole and panties are a wardrobe basic every doll should own.  This pretty camisole has a round neckline adorned with ribbon bow detail at the center front of the neckline or can be decorated with some flower buttons at the center front of yoke. As an option, the yoke is decorated with stretch lace. The camisole has an A-line skirt that flows from the yoke. The skirt bottom is completed with stretch lace or picot elastic and straps crisscross at back.
The panties have a lace band and V front panel.
All raw edges of the garments are finished with FOE.

During the 1920s jazz age and the later swing era, women wore "Unmentionables" shaped with long widened legs that sat just below the waist. Often paired with a matching Bralette or Bandeau, they could be made of everything from slinky, luxurious silks to soft lightweight cottons. Overseas they were often referred to as "French Knickers," and in the Italy they were usually called "Tap Pants," probably because of their resemblance to dance wear. Sometimes they were even gathered into bloomers! During the 1930s and beyond shorts became popular and echoed the shape of the formerly unmentionable Tap Pants through the early 1950s. The Vintage Tap Pants pattern, by Forever 18 Inches, plays with all of these themes: shorts with pleats and schoolgirl suspenders, simpler shorts following the dance wear trend, and an authentic replica of Bloomers and French Knickers. Brave the winter in this Laura Ingalls Wilder inspired Union Suit by Thimbles and Acorns. Union suits first came on the market as part of the rational dress movement for women in 1868. Originally called the "Emancipation Under-Flannel" it was designed as an alternative to restricting corsets. Their practical design soon made them popular among men as well. This one piece undergarment is based on the traditional design that is still popular today and can be made for either boys or girls. It fastens in the front with five buttons and features a functional dropseat that closes with four. For those that have experience making buttonholes, it is a quick and easy pattern to make. For those that want to learn to make buttonholes, this is a great pattern to develop your skills!

The distinct style of ladies’ dress in the 18th century was achieved by a complex succession of layers that began with the underpinnings. Underpinnings were what we might refer to as underwear today, and they provided the basic structure and dimension that made 18th century fashion unique. The name is somewhat deceptive, however, as underpinnings weren't always out of sight - they were simply the first layers of a complete outfit. In fact, for a working class girl, the underpinnings may have been all that she wore from day to day.

Underneath every beautiful Victorian gown was a system of undergarments that not only defined and provided the structure for the fashionable silhouettes of the time, but also helped maintain Queen Victoria's stringent standards of propriety. A chemise and a pair of drawers were worn next to the skin to protect the corset and dress from the skin and the skin from the corset and the dress. The drawers main purpose, however, was to provide a bit of cover should some mishap cause a dress to fly up. A corset was worn over the chemise and drawers, to smooth and shape the torso as well as to disperse the weight of heavy petticoats and dresses in an effort to relieve back strain. Petticoats provided extra warmth and to filled out a dresses skirting. Before the crinoline was invented, it was common to wear seven petticoats at a time. The crinoline was quickly embraced by ladies wanting to shed their hot heavy layers of petticoats. Only one or two petticoats were needed, an under petticoat for warmth and an over petticoat to smooth out the ridges of the crinoline. As necessary as these garments were to create the fashionable silhouette of the time, undergarments were considered very private articles of clothing that a proper lady would not even consider mentioning in public.
